Photograph coins for a better AI grade estimate
The model can only assess evidence your photograph preserves. A repeatable setup helps surface detail, wear, marks, and luster appear consistently across both sides.
Phone centered, light from both sides
Repeatability beats a dramatic image
Balanced side lighting reduces deep shadows. A centered phone keeps the coin round rather than distorted. A plain, non-reflective background helps the camera expose for the coin instead of the scene.
Use the same distance and lighting for the obverse and reverse so differences come from the coin, not the setup.
Five checks before analysis
- Show the entire coin. Keep the rim visible and avoid cropping. Fill most of the frame without using digital zoom.
- Confirm sharp focus. Tap the coin surface to focus, steady the phone, and inspect lettering and high points before submitting.
- Use neutral, diffuse light. Daylight or a neutral lamp works when softened and balanced. Avoid strong color casts.
- Control glare without hiding luster. A slight tilt can reveal cartwheel luster, but move the light or phone if a bright hotspot covers important detail.
- Match both sides. Photograph the obverse and reverse at the same distance, angle, exposure, and lighting.
What changes the estimate
Fine detail disappears
Camera shake and missed focus can make wear look smoother or hide marks the model needs to see.
Highlights erase evidence
Bright white reflections can cover fields, lettering, and devices. Diffuse or move the light and recheck the surface.
Wear becomes ambiguous
Dark areas may hide scratches and remaining detail. Balance light from both sides instead of relying on one harsh source.
The same coin looks different
Changes in tilt and exposure change visible luster and contrast, so repeat the setup when comparing scans.
